A-Z Guide
Glossary of PC security terms.

The vandal, the thief
        and the time-waster

Data destruction, information theft and loss of productive time – these are challenges we face as professionals and citizens.

The Malware Menace
Malware is the general term for the three types of malicious software programs that operate without the knowledge or consent of computer users: viruses, worms and trojans.
Their effects range from the merely annoying to the totally destructive.

The Spyware Thieves
Spyware programs, some used by criminal gangs, attack Internet-connected PCs to:

  • Steal financial information, software product codes and other data from PC hard disk drives.
  • Hijack victims' PCs to store illegal material, relay spam e-mails and attack websites operated by large companies or government agencies.

The Spam Timewasters
Over 50% of all Internet e-mail is now composed of mass-circulation, unwanted messages. Most messages are believed to be the work of about 200 spammers who send some 50 million e-mails a day.
Spam includes 'junk' e-mail, hoaxes and, increasingly, phishes – attempts by criminals to deceive individuals and organisations into disclosing confidential information.
