Software security updates:
     prevention better than cure

Security vulnerabilities in legitimate computer files can be fixed by updates provided by their makers.

Fixing 'Security Holes'
Vulnerabilities – sometimes called security holes – within legitimate computer files expose them to infection by viruses or to manipulation by worms and trojans.

Anti-malware programs can deal with the results of such vulnerabilities. But after a malware program is deleted from a PC, the security holes in legitimate computer files still remain.

Downloading 'Security Fixes'
Most software makers offer regular security updates for their products to minimise the malware threats. Security updates or 'fixes' can be downloaded in two ways:

  • Automatic updates: With this method your legitimate software program downloads the security fixes for you as soon as they become available.
  • On request: With this method you update your software by choosing a menu command within the software program.
